Includes the personal and departmental correspondence files of the directors, Albert E. Whitford, 1948-1958 ; Arthur D. Code, 1958-1965; including Joel Stebbins, 1946-1948. Some material relates to Dr. Whitford's activities as a member of the National Astronomical Observatory, the National Science Foundation and the Advisory Committee on the Office of Naval Researach (ONR). Regarding the ONR, the University in association with the Astronomy Department had a research contract with the United States Navy to explore the theory of radiative equilibrium in stellar atmospheres using the photoelectric technique. Dr. Whitford was the Principal Investigator in this project. Among his personal and professional correspondence are many inquiries regarding atmospheric phenomenon such as unidentified flying objects, solar eclipses, etc.
